Faf du Plessis has encouraged fans to relax when considering South Africas transformation policy, now that the team has showed they can win with it in place. Since the targets - which require the national team to field a minimum of six players of colour on an average, including two black Africans over the course of a season - were announced in early September , South Africa have played six ODIs and won all of them, while also nearly meeting their transformation requirements.Across the ODIs - one against Ireland and five against Australia - South Africas average was just under their target of six players of colour, and they fielded at least two black Africans in every game. Their XI included seven players of colour against Ireland, with four black Africans, five players of colour in three of the five ODIs against Australia, and six in the other two. They will have the opportunity to make up for the shortfall in later matches this season.People will relax now and see that its not that bad. People were expecting big changes and big defeats, but now, people can relax and see there is enough talent, no matter what colour you are, du Plessis said. Our cricket is in a healthy state. People can be confident that even with those targets, we are a force to be reckoned with. One of the concerns with implementing the targets was that it would affect the balance of the team, but JP Duminys return to form, and the unearthing of Andile Phehlukwayo and Tabraiz Shamsi have meant that South Africa had all bases covered in the series. Perhaps, reassuringly, while the players of colour proved themselves in this series, there was also enough room for white players, too, to show their worth. Phehlukwayo, in his first international series, was the leading wicket-taker, Duminy returned to form with two important half-centuries, and Shamsi is putting his hand up as a successor to Imran Tahir. Rilee Rossouw, previously on the fringes of the side, and David Miller, who had been dropped, also had stand-out showings in a series in which South Africas inclusivity did not go unnoticed.Du Plessis confirmed the team has embraced the transformation targets, especially now that the specifics are in the public domain. We try and embrace it. The positive is that it is open and there is a honest policy out there. Everyone knows what its all about and everyone can buy into it. As long as you are open and honest, you can move forward, he said.Prior to September, South Africa insisted there were no targets at the national level, although they unofficially aimed to include four players of colour in an XI. That was evident at the 2015 World Cup when Vernon Philander was brought into the team in place of Kyle Abbott despite missing large swathes of the tournament due to injury. This happened after the coach and captain met with the CEO, who reminded them to pick the best team with transformation guidelines in mind. The fall-out from that incident hung over South African cricket for many months, during which performances slipped.Last summer, South Africa tumbled from No.1 to No.6 in the Test rankings, were booted out of the World T20 in the first round, and appeared a spent force. Pressure grew on coach Russell Domingo, whose contract is in place until April next year, and it was expected he would be replaced. However, a team culture camp before this series rejuvenated the players and coaches, and du Plessis credited Domingo for his resilience at a tough time.As a squad, we made a huge transition when we went away and had a hard look at ourselves, and the coaches were part of it. They were really eager to try and improve themselves, and since that day, they have been brilliant. Russell has stepped his game up, he is challenging people and players now, and the coaching staff are demanding more from players, du Plessis said. Its important we dont take that for granted because we have an extremely tough Test tour of Australia coming up. I accept that we wont win every series, but its important for us to know what we need to do to be at our best. Russell has been really good. There was a lot of pressure on them after the West Indies tri-series and thats normal. You get that when a team doesnt perform, but full credit must go to him for how he has stepped up.South Africa will shift from limited-overs to Tests and will play six in succession - three in Australia and three at home against Sri Lanka - in a bid to climb up the rankings again. The first Test in Australia starts on November 3 in Perth. Cheap Wholesale Asics . Ouellette, from Montreal, already has three Olympic gold medals since joining the team in 1999. SHANGHAI -- Hideki Matsuyama of Japan never gave anyone a chance Sunday, closing with a 6-under 66 to win the HSBC Champions and become the first Asian winner in the 18 years of the World Golf Championships. It was only fitting that Matsuyama won the WGC billed as Asias major. The 24-year-old Matsuyama hit his second shot into the water on the par-5 18th hole and still finished with a par, holing an 18-foot putt. That gave him a seven-shot victory over British Open champion Henrik Stenson (65) and Daniel Berger (69).It was the largest margin of victory at the HSBC Champions, and the largest in a WGC since Tiger Woods won by seven in the 2013 Bridgestone Invitational.Starting the final round with a three-shot lead, Matsuyama hit his approach into 4 feet for birdie and was on his way. His only difficult moment came at the par-3 fourth hole when he went over the green and his chip came out soft, stopping some 15 feet short of the cup. Berger had a 10-foot birdie attempt, setting up the potential for a two-shot swing that would have cut the lead to two shots.Matsuyama holed the putt, then hit an approach up the hill to 4 feet on the next hole for birdie. He poured it on along the back nine with a 35-foot birdie putt on the 13th, a two-putt birdie on the par-5 14th hole and then another strong approach out of the rough to the tough 15th that settled 3 feet away.He played his final 45 holes at Sheshan International without a bogey. Matsuyama finished at 23-under 265, one shot away from the tournament record set three years ago by Dustin Johnson. It was the 10th career victory for Matsuyama, who goes to a career-best No. 6 in the world ranking. In the last three weeks since he finished his best PGA Tour season with fifth place at the Tour Championship, Matsuyama won the Japan Open, was runner-up in Malaysia to Justin Thomas in the CIMB Classic, and then won his biggest tournament yet.SIME DARBY LPGA MALAYSIAKUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia -- Shanshan Feng won the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia to cap a string of high finishes that started with an Olympic bronze medal. The 27-year-old Chinese star beat Suzann Pettersen by three strokes at TPC Kuala Lumpur, shooting a 4-under 67 after finishing off a third-round 64 in the morning.Feng won the tournament for the second time to push her LPGA Tour victory total to five, ending a drought that stretched to her 2014 win in Kuala Lumpur. This story appears in ESPN The Magazines Oct. 17 Great Debates Issue. Subscribe today!THERE IS MORE than just a debate point here for female athletes; there is a double standard. When Ronda Rousey wouldnt touch gloves with Holly Holm before their fight last November, people absolutely crushed her for it, even though male UFC fighters -- Dominick Cruz, Anderson Silva, Nate Diaz, Conor McGregor (to name just a few) -- dont always touch gloves. In Rio, Gabby Douglas appeared disappointed (gasp!) that she narrowly missed the chance to defend her gymnastics all-around title. Social media critics came down on her hard for showing her desire to compete, an athletic virtue thats as revered as the Games themselves. With this as a baseline, when someone is as outspoken as Hope Solo -- who was taken to task for her blunt criticisms well before her recent legal trouble -- it stands out.The dilemma female athletes face is that those who stay in the safe, wholesome lane are labeled boring and cited as a reason womens sports arent as popular as mens. So how can a female athlete be compelling without also being viewed as controversial?I emailed a group of phenomenal female athletes -- and one legendary womens coach -- to pose those questions. Here is an edited version of our reply-all thread.ROUNDTABLE PARTICIPANTSRamona Shelburne ESPN senior writer and former Stanford softball playerGeno Auriemma UConn womens basketball coachLashinda Demus 2012 Olympic silver medalist in the 400-meter hurdlesStacey Nuveman Deniz Olympic softball playerJulie Foudy U.S. soccer legend and ESPN commentatorNatasha Watley Olympic softball playerCat Zingano UFC bantamweight fighterRAMONA SHELBURNE: Why cant women just own their feelings and be competitive? Why cant we be pissed off or visibly disappointed when we lose or dont see our name in the lineup?JULIE FOUDY: Some of it is the expectation -- That is what a nice girl does -- but I also think we women are still hesitant to own our awesome. It isnt literally wearing an I Am Awesome T-shirt or walking around saying how awesome you are. There is hubris and there is confidence. No one likes, in any gender, overconfident a--holes. We women, present company included, are terrible at owning our awesomeness. I feel like into my 40s I am finally just getting there.STACEY NUVEMAN DENIZ: Im not sure the concept or expectation of successful females -- athletes, politicians or any woman in a public space -- is to be nice. I think the expectation is to be humble. Humility might be the most revered quality of any female with any amount of accomplishment. I think back to the times I was complimented for being humble and the pride I felt for being characterized that way. I was an accomplished athlete, and downplaying my success -- the polar opposite of owning my awesome -- was my greatest attribute.NATASHA WATLEY: I can remember losing in the gold medal game [to Japan] at the 2008 Olympics, returning home and having everyone say, You should be proud of your silver medal, not many people get to compete in the Olympics. I get it. What else could they say? But I really wanted to say, F you! We didnt prepare for endless months to win a silver medal. Its like as a female athlete its not supposed to be in our nature to be pissed at losing.LaSHINDA DEMUS: Im extremely competitive but never show it. Ive been constantly told that I need to try to focus on hitting a certain demographic of women, not men. But most of these women I was told to try to reach actually cared nothing about my athletic capabilities because they cant connect with that, according to both male and female public relations specialists that I spoke with.SHELBURNE: Is it even possible for a female athlete to be real, bold and interesting without being cast in a negative light? Or is going negative still the only way to get attention?FOUDY: Ive heard people say womens sports needs more antiheroes. I couldnt disagree more. We dont need more anti-heroes; we need more women to be the big personalities that live inside them. We need more people promoting those personalities. We dont need more domestic violence incidents, more drunken driving incidents, more negativity. We need women who are willing to be big and bold and show us how being a great teammate/player is indeed newsworthy.GENO AURIEMMA: Why should female athletes be held to the standard that male athletes have set? In order to be compelling, you have to throw a tantrum, commit assault, carry a weapon or get suspended for drug use? Is Tom Brady not compelling? Tim Duncan? Mike Trout? Why do you think the NFL is cracking down on idiotic behavior? Its because it doesnt sell anymore. Why cant women just be great athletes? Leave it at that.CAT ZINGANO: I am constantly being told about the lack of hype I create, although I am one of the most entertaining female fighters to date. There are educated and die-hard fans who love and support the evolution of the sport for women. But it seems that you must also have a story, sex appeal and the ability to stir up drama to retain fans and be paid [well].I was recently told to use my strong points: that I am a single mom, that I have a story, that I can clean up and have sex appeal. I would rather wear sweatpants and throw my hair in a knot! But in order to further my career, I need to work harder, not at my craft but at promoting myself outside of the Octagon. I just want to work hard at my sport. I want my personal achievement and work ethic to speak for me.DEMUS: Competing professionally, especially in a sport that gets glamorized every four years, is difficult. You have a few angles to take as a female track athlete to actually make a living from it. You can be the prettiest little thing out there with not so much talent as the next athlete in hopes of getting the attention of sponsorships, or you can be the Mother Teresa athlete who is politically correct along with a nearly perfect career. Ever since I was a little girl, my goal was to be the best. Thats it. It was not until I became professional that I was told I should focus on my branding and how I appeal to the public.SHELBURNE: Nuvey, you are so funny; people told me they peed their pants during your banquet speech at a Womens College World Series. Do you ever let that humor rip publicly? Did you have the right forum to do so, before social media was so pervasive? I think if you asked most people who they remember from those U.S. Olympic softball teams, it would be Jennie Finch, who was a great pitcher but also indisputably got attention for her beauty. Do you think that would be the same today?NUVEMAN DENIZ: Womens team sports, softball in particular, have a pretty clearly defined audience: families. Softball goes after the daddy-daughter market, and as such, the more wholesome and family-friendly the personality, the better. Jennie shined in the spotlight, with style and grace, and Im proud of how she handled it. Soccer has been the same, historically. The women who were front and center for USA softball and USA soccer during my tenure were phenomenal athletes but also safe personalities who embraced being a role model and did little to tarnish that responsibility. For me personally, I was a Row 2 athlete from a marketing and publicity standpoint: I wasnt front and center, but I wasnt back row either. I didnt have many opportunities to let my humor rip, but when I did, I held back some. I tried to be charming but safe.WATLEY: Its amazing what people focus on. Although Jennie herself is extremely humble (I adore her!), it was completely out of her control how much attention she got for her beauty when she had so many amazing accolades on the field. Im with Coach Auriemma: When will women be praised for just being phenomenal athletes?AURIEMMA: I still contend that we in the womens game should not aspire to be like the men. We should work really hard to keep pointing out why our behavior is more acceptable and long-term more appealing to the next generation of fans.SHELBURNE: Speaking of the next generation, if we reconvene this panel in five or 10 years, what will be different?DEMUS: At times I think things are going backward. Sponsors are showing that less attention is being put into athletic abilities and more into backstories and drama, so women are continuing to find a happy medium between being their true competitive self and who the public wants them to be.I wrote a blog awhile back about when Drake hosted the ESPYS. It was a bit they did with Skylar Diggins and Drake and his love for her being beautiful. Nothing was mentioned about her abilities.Ive seen a glimmer of hope in boxing and mixed martial arts. It seems to be accepted by the masses better, so theyre doing something right over there. One thing that men love and find appealing is aggression. I believe that if women bring that to sports, with women showing their true competitiveness, it will pull in more male viewers.FOUDY: I can tell you what wont be different in five to 10 years time: how much attention is paid to external beauty rather than talent. As much as we find that annoying, its the reality of society, and sadly its not going away. Sure, it also exists on the mens side with a David Beckham or Tom Brady type, but those men dont need looks to be popular, get sponsors and drive page views. It simply enhances the revenue on the mens side, where most women depend on it.What will be different in five to 10 years is the level of support around womens sports from more women being at all levels of media. We need people, women and men, who wake up every single day and their priority every single day is to help grow the womens game. Yes, every single day.NUVEMAN DENIZ: The prospect of a woman in the White House could go a long way to shifting this paradigm. If cultural norms are to be challenged, men and women need to experience females in positions of power and watch them kick ass.The pressures will be tremendous to do it right and do it well for these women, and they will face obstacles and unfair standards and criticisms and resistance, but thats how it goes. Look at any progressive concept in our countrys history and the road map is there for us to see. But the day-to-day, relentless pursuit is how change will happen.ZINGANO: Ronda Rousey was a huge advocate for women in the UFC, and Im grateful to her for many reasons. She makes very good money, but she sacrificed herself to better our opportunities as female fighters trying to capitalize on the highest platform. She also exudes the f--- it, f--- off, f--- them, f--- you, f--- me mentality we all know we think. Yes, some people hate her for it, but its good for women to gauge themselves on, to say, OK, she took that a little far, but she has a point, this taboo topic does need to ?be addressed.I want the freedom to push the limits of whats been achieved in my sport and raise the bar while doing things differently. If I fail while trying to do things differently, oh well. If I succeed at doing things differently?Hell yes. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Houston Texans actually had a nice road trip. No surprise it came in Jacksonville, where the Jaguars are winless this season.Brock Osweiler threw two touchdown passes, Kareem Jackson returned an interception 42 yards for a score and the Texans beat the Jaguars 24-21 on Sunday for their first road win in 2016.The Texans (6-3) scored on offense and defense and set up another score with special teams, a complete team effort that kept them perfect (3-0) against the AFC South. They won their fifth in a row against Jacksonville. This one came despite Osweiler throwing for 99 yards. We have to play the game the way we see it playing out, Texans coach Bill OBrien said. We dont worry about stats. I think everyone needs to understand that in the National Football League its all about winning. Its about winning. Whatever it takes to win that is what we try to do. Sometimes it doesnt work out, but six times this year it has worked out and three times it hasnt. Hopefully, we can be on the positive side of the ledger. The Jaguars (2-7) lost their fourth straight and fell to 0-4 at home. Coach Gus Bradleys team rallied late, with Blake Bortles hitting Allen Robinson for a touchdown and again for a 2-point conversion to make it a three-point game. But the Texans converted a third-and-5 play with 2 minutes to play and were able to run out the clock. The loss dropped Bradleys record to 14-43 in four seasons and prompted even Jacksonvilles most loyal supporters to question why owner Shad Khan hasnt made a change. You cant do anything besides put your head down and continue to work, Bortles said.Houston had been downright dismal on the road this season , scoring just one touchdown in lopsided losses at New England, Minnesota and Denver. The Texans found Jacksonville to be much more hospitable, especially on the opening drive. On the fifth play of the game, Jackson stepped in front of Allen Hurns , tipped the ball up, bobbled it, secured it and sauntered down the sideline before juking Bortles and high-stepping into the end zone. Punt returner Tyler Ervin helped make it 21-10 in the third quarter, weaving his way for 57 yards and setting the Texans up at the 7-yard line. Osweiler hooked up with Stephen Anderson on the nextt play.dddddddddddd.Nick Novak, who missed two field goals earlier, connected on a 51-yarder with 8:32 remaining that gave Houston some breathing room. The Texans kept that drive alive by converting a third-and-16 play from the 19. Akeem Hunt, called up from the practice squad Saturday, ran around the left end for 17 yards. That was crushing, Jaguars defensive tackle Malik Jackson said. I thought it was a pass for sure. Everybody made a mistake thinking it was pass. Weve got to get off blocks and make the tackle. Nobody seemed to do that and we lost. Two or three plays as a defense will show us why we lost the game, but we were playing a hell of a game. The Texans finished with 181 yards on the ground.FLUKY FUMBLEThe Jaguars added to their lowlight reel in the second quarter when Bortles did the most Bortles thing ever .Under heavy pressure and trying to ground the ball near tightly covered running back T.J. Yeldon, Bortles hit Yeldon in the foot. The ball bounced up and landed in linebacker Whitney Mercilus hands for what initially was ruled an interception. It was later changed to a lateral and a fumble.Ive never seen that happen, Bortles said. From the time you start playing quarterback, they tell you if the screen is covered, throw it at his feet. I was trying to make the smart play and live to play another down and that happens. Unfortunate.MISSING MENEven though it came against dysfunctional Jacksonville, Houstons victory was somewhat impressive considering how many key players the team was missing.Starting receiver Will Fuller (knee), run-stuffing nose tackle Vince Wilfork (groin) and cornerback A.J. Bouye (ankle) were inactive. So was fellow receiver Jaelen Strong, leaving the Texans with just three healthy wideouts.DROUGHTS CONTINUEThe Jaguars failed once again to score a touchdown on their opening possession, extending the NFLs longest current TD drought to open games to 23 games. Maybe even more baffling, the Jags have gone more than five games without a takeaway. Its officially 23 quarters and counting.---For more NFL coverage: http://www.pro32.ap.org and http://www.twitter.com/AP-NFL ' ' '

One section will be all hand rails and flat bars, one section will be gaps where skaters will do flip tricks and jumping down ramps and over sets of stairs, annother section will be a technical section with ledges where skaters can flip in and out, and the last section will be a big bowl.ddddddddddddMalto described it as more of a jam format, a little more open. Youll basically be put on each section for three minutes at a time, skate and flow and see what you come up with. Theres a little more room for failure but more room for excitement.Malto filmed a course preview with GoPro cameras on Wednesday. Its really well-built, he said. When I was skating I was thinking, `This is going to be a fun event. Sometimes when you step into these courses its like, `This is going to be a long weekend. But Im looking forward to it.Title sponsor Mountain Dew enlisted The Enthusiast Network to help create the new skate competition and a consumer festival. ' ' '
In the week that Theresa May became the oldest person to enter 10 Downing Street as Prime Minister since James Callaghan in 1976, the remarkable Misbah-ul-Haq became the oldest person to play in a Test match in England since Brian Close, oddly enough, in 1976.Close, who was 46 when he was asked to pad up against Michael Holding, Andy Roberts and Wayne Daniel, had, 27 years earlier, become Englands youngest ever Test player. Misbahs achievement, at 42 , was even more extraordinary. The first Test against England at Lords was the first he had ever played in that country. Indeed of his young and exciting team, only four - including the great Younis Khan and Mohammad Amir - had toured England before. It was after their last tour of England in 2010, and the spot- fixing scandal that besmirched their last Test appearance at Lords, that Misbah was brought in, as it were to clean out the Augean stables. He has been outstanding in every respect . It is naturally tempting to compare him with Imran Khan, the only other Pakistan captain capable of bringing disparate and willful talents together to form a conglomerate of something like greatness. But the real comparison is with one of history s outstanding captains, Frank Worrell, who led the West Indies to glory in the early 1960s. Both men had something special, something that fulfilled a need felt by a particular team, full of hugely talented individuals at a particular time. Both were essentially father figures - Imran never really managed that - and had an unchallengeable authority that did not need to be demonstrably seen to be followed.Misbahs century on his first appearance in a Test in England was a lustrous adornment to a special Lords day. Pakistan were not exactly in difficulty when he arrived but they should have been doing better. As so often, he showed the way. He is always an immensely sensible batsman but he is so much more than that. The way Englands change bowlers - on the day at least, Steven Finn and Moeen Ali - were dealt with was as clinical as it was elegant. The Lords Test will be remembered for many things apart from Misbahs century. It was one of those games whose bare result - a Pakistan win by 75 runs - tells very little about the intensity of the contest, particularly on the gripping final day. The performances of Yasir Shah and Chris Woakes were especially telling but if there is an abiding memory, it will be Misbahs celebratory press- ups on reaching his century. It has always been more or less assumed that he is the fittest man in the side - although in the field he is s beginning to show signs of what property lawyers call fair wear and tear. Be that as it may, his achievement was remarkable for a 42-year old.Andrew Miller, speaking on ESPNcricinfo, said it was a throwback to the days of Jack Hobbs. Hobbs famously completed a hundred first- class centuries after his 40th birthday. He was exceptional but not unusual. When he toured Australia for the fifth and last time in 1928-29 under Percy Chapman (aged 28) England won 4-1. Hobbs turned 46 on the tour, Phil Mead 41, Patsy Hendren and Ernest Tyldesley both 40.Even in relatively recent times forty-plus players have featured in England Test sides. Alec Stewart carried on till he was 40, just. Eddie Hemmings was 41 when Kapil Dev hit him for four successive sixes to save the follow-on at Lords in 1990. This was the game in which Graham Gooch made a triple century and another hundred; he too went on till he was well over 40.But for a player not from England to go on for so long is highly unusual. The historical reason for this is the professional structure of the English game. English players, operating in the county system, had careers that could last for decades. It was different in, say, Australia, where in Richie Benauds time even the best could not go on indefinitely. Great players like Alan Davidson and Neil Harvey left the game relatively early: Harvey, the last survivor of Don Bradmans 1948 Invincibles, made four Ashes tours of England but when he retired he was only 33. Bradman himself made four tours of England. He turned forty at the end of that 1948 tour.It was the same elsewhere. Even Worrell was only 38 when he made his third and final tour of England in 1963. Clive Lloyd, a comparable figure in some ways, turned 40 at the end of the triumphant tour of England in 1984. Of course overseas players who played in county cricket, like Lloyd, Viv Richards, Gordon Greenidge, Zaheer Abbas and Courtney Walsh, tended to have longer careers. But none of them, not Sachin Tendulkar or Shivnarine Chanderpaul, the old war horses of the modern era, played a Test in England after turning 40.Bert Sutcliffe, the classy New Zealand left hander, toured England in 1965 at the age of 41. It was not a success . He never really recovered from being hit on the head by a ball from Fred Trueman, himself hardly a stripling at 34.Commendable though Misbahs achievements are, it is difficult to see him as a trend-setter in respect of the age of Test cricketers. Its a different world. Misbah was a special man for a particular occasion, which he rose to in a way that no one could really have anticipated. We must take him for what he is - a magnificent aberration, and a rare and joyous combination of the ordinary and the extraordinary.Want to be featured on Inbox? Perfectly promoted, perfectly poised There was a determined effort from administrators to give the Womens Big Bash League the best chance to build on the gains made in season one. First, they carved out an opening weekend free of interference from the mens international calendar. Then they threw as much of it as possible on live television for a chance to quickly capture hearts and minds. It worked a treat. The marquee game of the four shown on Network Tens main station was Sydney Thunder versus Melbourne Stars on Saturday prime time, which generated nearly 680,000 viewers across the country at its peak, with an average just over half that number. It also happened to be the match of the round.Generating back-page newspaper coverage in the process, with 6000 spectators coming through the gates at North Sydney Oval across the six-game carnival, the foundation for WBBL02 has been laid. The quality and evenness of the contests followed, each team finishing the opening flurry of fixtures with a win and a loss. It is a season perfectly poised.Big guns bring ammo… As with any domestic hit-out, much of the success hinges on performances of the biggest names from home and abroad, and they didnt miss out at the first time of asking.Caribbean crusher Deandra Dottins unbeaten 60 in 44 balls enabled the Brisbane Heat to rally from a parlous situation to chase down the Sydney Sixers, including a blow off Ellyse Perry that nearly ended up on the moon.In both clashes between Adelaide Strikers and Melbourne Renegades, Sophie Devine saved the formers innings with her blade at number six, the New Zealand international carrying on where she left off last season with two brisk hands of 43 and 41 not out.Perth Scorchers stacked batting came correct in their second fixture against Hobart Hurricanes, thanks to 48 from Kiwi captain Suzie Bates and a fine half-century from Australian opener Elyse Villani. Bajan sensation Hayley Matthews won the first of those rubbers for the Tasmanian side, racking up a brisk 48 at the top of the order after taking two wickets. To cap off the round it was Perrys turn, converting her consistently brilliant performances from the international arena to the WBBL with an unbeaten 45, squaring the ledger for her Sixers against the Heat.…but small arms can still win skirmishes Thats right, it wasnt all about the big-name players. Emerging sorts and new arrivals put themselves firrmly in the public eye, none more so than a Renegade with a new claim to all-rounder status.ddddddddddddSophie Molineuxs weekend got major real estate in both major Melbourne newspapers. First she bowled tidily with 0-24 before making 37 not out as her team collapsed around her chasing 117. The next day, annoyed at the loss, she grabbed the first four wickets in the rematch with Adelaide, ran out their star import Charlotte Edwards, then smashed 28 not out from 18 balls to ensure this target of 129 was run down without incident. Teammate and fellow Molly (Strano) had a decent weekend alongside, with 3 for 16 in the first game and 1 for 20 in the second, meaning the two Mollies share the top of the leagues wicket-taking table. Another level with them is Harmanpreet Kaur, hardly classifiable as emerging after her exploits with India, but a new face in this league. She delivered with immediate effect for Sydney Thunder, not just with four wickets in their second-game win over Melbourne Stars, but her brilliant batting. The target of 147 set by Stars in the first match was steep, especially from 87 for 4 with 32 balls remaining, but Kaur very nearly ran it down, her 47 from 28 including a couple of gorgeous sixes over cover. In the rematch, she belted a couple more sixes in a score of 30 not out to stroll past Melbournes 116.To infinity and beyond Thankfully this year has no more of the strange scheduling that saw teams sometimes playing twice in a day, but they are often playing back to back. Theyre also getting around the country, after visits to Drummoyne and Albury in this first few days. This coming weekend gets some more locations on the list. Adelaide Strikers and Sydney Thunder kick things off on Friday at Penrith, then back it up again on the Saturday. The other sides each start on Saturday, then rematch at the same venue on the Sunday: Perth Scorchers host Brisbane Heat at the WACA, Melbourne Stars host Sydney Sixers in the very south-east corner of their hometown down in Cranbourne, and Melbourne Renegades escort Hobart Hurricanes on a road trip to Bendigo, which will hopefully be a bonding experience and rite of passage in which both sets of players learn to put aside their differences and grow as people in the process. After stunning the tennis world with an impressive 2014 season that included a spot in the Wimbledon final and berths in the semifinals of the Australian Open and French Open, Eugenie Bouchard has become one of the most recognizable faces on the WTA Tour. And while she has struggled to achieve the same levels of success in the two seasons since, she remains one of the most popular and talented players in the sport.Currently enjoying her all-too-brief offseason, we caught up with the 22-year-old Canadian recently at an event for Colgate Enamel Health in New York. With thoughts on everything from the Rio Olympics to upcoming vacation plans to her much-talked-about Halloween costume, Bouchard did not hold back.espnW: How is your offseason going so far?Eugenie Bouchard: Its going well! Its been two weeks, so far, that Im off completely. And by completely, I mean: I dont go to a gym, I dont look at a gym, I dont think about a gym. Its really important to me to just get a couple of weeks off, and not only physically, but mentally as well. Its a mental, refreshing break. Its about three weeks in total -- Ill get back to training next week. And once in awhile, Ill go on a run or join my friend or sister to a yoga class, but its for fun, and its not something I have to do.espnW: You must look forward to that all year.Bouchard: I do! Its like what we think about, especially as the year ends. I start to think How many more tournaments? Were all counting them down.espnW: Have you gone, or are you going on any vacations during your time off?Bouchard: Im planning on going to the Bahamas for a quick weekend getaway. I just want to have that feeling of being on vacation. Obviously, I got to spend some time with my family in Montreal and spent a week in New York City doing a bunch of meetings, appearances, cool events, things like that, but theres nothing quite like lying on the beach all day, having a margarita.espnW: When you do return to working out, what do your offseason workouts entail?Bouchard: Right at the beginning of the preseason training, Ill do mostly fitness for the first week or two. Nowadays fitness is so important to us tennis players, and we just spend so much more time in the gym than the old guys used to back in the day.Its actually kind of fun to be working out and getting stronger when you dont quite have the repetitiveness of practicing so much. Ill start with that and do a couple hours of fitness a day, and the offseason is a cool time to experiment and try different things, so I like to sometimes switch it up and do a hike up a mountain or a pool workout. Its important for your mind to mix it up.espnW: Is there any specific music you like to listen to for motivation during a workout?Bouchard: During a workout, I really like hip-hop or house or something that just gets you going, because it does motivate you, and it does make a difference. When youre lifting weights that you never imagined you could lift, its because youre motivated and you have that adrenaline pumping. So if music can help just 1 percent with that, why not? I say just blast it! Im such a fan of Drake. Any of his upbeat songs work for me.espnW: What was the highlight of 2016 for you?Bouchard: The highlight would have to be going to the Olympics. It was so cool to have this this feeling of representing something bigger than yourself and representing your country. It was also great to have teammates -- thats not something were used to in tennis. There was such a sense of pride. The moment thats coming to mind is walking in during the opening ceremony. Knowing youre on TV and waving and knowing -- literally feeling -- your whole country watching and supporting you, it was such a surreal and amazing moment. It was definitely worth going to Rio.espnW: Did you get a chance to meet, or watch anyone compete, that you hadnt had the opportunity to before?Bouchard: I really tried to make an effort to go see some events. It was pretty hectic with tennis all day, and the venues are all far apart, but one night I was able to watch gymnastics. I was watching the qualifying rounds. I didnt get to see the Americans, who I really wanted to see, but I did get to see some of our Canadian girls. It was basically the whole Canadian team there cheering them on. When I think of the Olympics, I think of womens gymnastics. To me, thats what it is. Just to see it in person was amazing.espnW: Did it live up to what you had hoped it would be?Bouchard: Yes, definitely. What really stood out to me is that they compete at the same time on all their different exercises, and one crowd can start cheering for the girl on the beam, but the girl on the floor is still going! Its the craziest thing. We think we have to focus! They get their one shot every four years, and someone could just start screaming in the middle of their vault.I didnt know it all went on at the same time like that, and maybe just watching on TV I just didnt realize it so much, but in person its insane. Without even realizing it, thats someones Olympics right there, all of five seconds. I just have so much respect for what these girls do.espnW: Did you get to go to any other events while you were there?Bouchard: I also went to swimming. I got to see Michael Phelps in a semifinal heat. Whats crazy about swimming is that there are so many races because they are so short. We were there for an hour or two and saw something like 10 races. But to see Phelps in person, and see his routine where he stretches his arms all around, and being in the presence of such a legend, was really cool. I also saw some final races as well, and just to witness the joy of swimmers who won medals and knowing their lives had totally changed in that instant was amazing.espnW: Speaking of celebrities, I have to ask about this. You went as Kim Kardashian for Halloween, how did that come to be?Bouchard: You should totally ask me about it! Its crazy because that idea just popped in my head, and I cant explain my brain and its mechanics. Obviously I just remembered that picture and thought it would be hilarious to not only impersonate her, but specifically in that moment, and I had my friend do it with me.The point of it was obviously to exaggerate it, so Im talking hand towels stuffed in these little nude, Spanx-type of shorts, and literally stuffed some of my Nike socks in my little bra thing, and then my friend painted the cardboard black, and we took tape, and that was it! It was actually a pretty simple costume. All of my friends were texting me saying it was hilarious and stuff. Its funny, I really dont know how I thought about it. It was such an iconic moment, so I thought we should recreate it.espnW: Did you go out in public wearing that outfit? Bouchard: Yeah, we definitely walked around and hung out with our friends a bit! It was easily the most popular costume and the most unique. Thats the thing for me -- I love Halloween, and I usually do two costumes a year. We start texting about it and planning for in August. Its all about not doing something other people have done or have been doing for years. Even last year, I was with my best friend and my cousin and we created and made our costumes of sexy Mario Cart characters. I was sexy Bowser, so instead of a big shell on my back, I had a shell bra on. I take Halloween very seriously and take pride in being unique.espnW: Did you hear from any of the Kardashians about the costume? Bouchard: No! No one has heard from Kim right now! But I would love to meet any of the Kardashians. Someday, right?espnW: Are you surprised when something like that gets so much attention, or is it more par for the course for you now? Bouchard: Im always surprised. For me, its not something you get used to. I still feel like a normal person, and I still see myself as a typical 22-year-old, and to me, thats just dressing up and showing my friends what Im wearing. And then suddenly there are hundreds of articles talking about it! I have to remember sometimes, I cant just post anything on social media. Its always a surprise, and its always funny too when my coach will hear about something, and hes not even on social media. Hell hear about something on the news, and Ill always just joke with him, Dont follow me on Snapchat, please!espnW: Has there ever been something you posted and then youve regretted it? Bouchard: No! I do pay attention to that stuff, so I know what not to post.espnW: Obviously thats probably a tricky part of being a celebrity. Is there an upside? Bouchard: There is. The most amazing part to me is being able to inspire a kid. Whenever a kid or a parent tells me Im someones role model, I take it as such an honor. Im like, Why? Pick someone better than me! [Laughing] But its really just so cool to be that person for someone. And it lets me do such amazing things, like visit hospitals and go to kids camps and helping get kids involved in sports. I love being able to inspire and give people hope.espnW: Whats the biggest downside of fame for you? Bouchard: I think its the negativity thats out there. These days, theres a lot of it out there, and not just toward me, but toward a lot of people. No one is perfect, first of all, and I think its just a bit unfair about all the criticism I and fellow athletes can get sometimes. Were trying our best, and the hate just seems so illogical -- it just doesnt make sense to me. Its frustrating, but I try not to let it get to me.espnW: What are your goals for 2017? Bouchard: To do better than 2016! My goal is to focus on things I havent been doing right and really focus on those specific things. I want to take it one step at a time and really improve in those areas. And then, I think if I get myself on the right path, the results will come. Instead of just stressing about the result, I want to focus on everything that gets me there. I used to put too much pressure on myself, and its really not fun and actually detrimental to your performance.espnW: I know you would like to win every Grand Slam you compete in, but is there one that you think would mean the most to you? Bouchard: For me, its Wimbledon. Its always been Wimbledon. I love grass, Ive had success there. I won the junior tournament, and two years later I was playing in the final of the main event. Its the most prestigious and has such history. But, yes, I would be very happy to win any of them.espnW: And finally, being Canadian, is there any advice you would give to Americans who are contemplating a move north right now? Bouchard: Well, if you want to marry me for Canadian citizenship, Im available! [Laughing] There are so many jokes about that right now, and Ive seen so many of my friends post on Facebook, Im Canadian, and Im single, guys! But as for advice ... Its really cold there, so Im not sure you really want to come. Thats my advice!I moved to Florida. I live in Miami. Be prepared for the Arctic, and buy a down jacket. Montreal is beautiful, and the summer is very hot, but its just so short! Its like two or three months of amazingness and eight months of pure torture. LONDON -- There was Roger Federer, so famous for his flawless footwork, flat on his stomach, face down and motionless on the Centre Court grass after jamming the toe of his left shoe and stumbling during what turned out to be the fifth sets pivotal game in his Wimbledon semifinal. And, a little earlier Friday, there was Federer, so successful through the years thanks in part to such a pinpoint serve, double-faulting two times in a row -- What?! Really?! -- while getting broken to drop the fourth set.Two miscues of the sort youre just not used to seeing from him all that often. Two moments that even Federer found hard to fathom.Once seemingly on the verge of a victory that would have given him a record 11th berth in the Wimbledon final, and a shot at an unprecedented eighth mens championship at the All England Club, Federer lost his way and the match, beaten 6-3, 6-7 (3), 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 by sixth-seeded Milos Raonic. This one clearly hurts, because I felt I could have had it. So close, said Federer, who had his surgically repaired left knee checked by a trainer after the uncharacteristic fall and wasnt sure whether he was seriously injured. It was really so, so close.Quite true.Federer, owner of 17 major trophies in all, was merely one point from serving for the match when, ahead two sets to one, he got to 30-40 on Raonics serve at 4-all in the fourth. But the 25-year-old Raonic, the first man from Canada to reach a Grand Slam final, cast aside that break point with a 139 mph service winner. Soon, he was in charge.I sort of persevered. I was sort of plugging away, said Raonic, whose serve reached 144 mph, produced 23 aces and saved eight of nine break points. I was struggling through many parts of the match. He gave me a little opening towards the end of the fourth. I made the most of it.Carlos Moya -- one of Raonics trio of coaches, including three-time Wimbledon champion John McEnroe -- said Federer kind of opened the door for Milos to have a chance to come back. At this stage of the tournament, you pay for that.On Sunday, Raonic will face No. 2 Andy Murray, who easily eliminated No. 10 Tomas Berdych 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 in the second semifinal. Murray beat Raonic on grass in the Queens Club final three weeks ago.It will be Murrays 11th major final; hes won only two so far, including at Wimbledon in 2013, when he gave Britain its first mens champion at the tournament in 77 years. But this is Murrays first Grand Slam title match against someone other than Federer or Novak Djokovic.ddddddddddddYou learn from those matches, for sure, said Murray, whos 29. The older you get, you never know how many chances youre going to have.Federer, who turns 35 on Aug. 8, would have been the oldest finalist at the All England Club since 1974. He remains tied with Pete Sampras and William Renshaw (who played in the 1800s) with seven titles at Wimbledon, most recently in 2012, and was the runner-up to Djokovic the past two years.Maybe this time Federer ran out of steam, forced to play 10 sets in his last two matches, including a quarterfinal comeback from two sets down against Marin Cilic on Wednesday. Two years ago, Federer got past Raonic in straight sets in the Wimbledon semifinals. This time, Federer flinched the way he seemingly never used to.Serving to get to a tiebreaker at 6-5 in the fourth set, Federer went up 40-love. After a forehand winner by Raonic, the unthinkable: Those back-to-back double-faults to let Raonic back into the game. Eventually, Raonic took advantage of a soft volley to deliver a down-the-line backhand passing winner, breaking for the first time since the matchs fourth game -- which ended with a double-fault by Federer -- and sending the semifinal to a fifth set.I cant believe I served a double-fault twice. Unexplainable for me, really, Federer said. Very sad about that and angry at myself because never should I allow him to get out of that set that easily. He went up a break at 3-1 in the fifth by winning the game in which Federer tripped -- and contributed yet another double-fault.I hope its not so bad. I walked it off. I was able to finish, Federer said. But I dont slip a lot. I dont ever fall down. It was a different fall for me than Ive ever had.Asked how badly he might have been injured, Federer replied: I dont know yet. I dont even want to know. I just felt not the same afterwards. This has been a difficult season for Federer, who never needed an operation until having his knees torn cartilage repaired in February.Hes also had back issues, missed the French Open to end a 65-appearance streak at majors, and came to Wimbledon without a title in 2016.Youre playing who Roger is today, Raonic said, not who hes been the past few years.---Follow Howard Fendrich on Twitter at http://twitter.com/HowardFendrich ' ' '
EUGENE, Ore. -- Oregon tight end Pharaoh Brown would rather look to the future than dwell on the past.Moving on from the leg injury that sidelined him all of last season, Brown is focused on making the most of his senior season. So far, so good.Brown scored on an 11-yard touchdown pass from new Ducks quarterback Dakota Prukop on Saturday in the second quarter of Oregons 44-26 victory over Virginia. It was a sweet play, he said afterward. The crowd was going crazy. Its great to score. Its been a long time.He finished with five catches for 55 yards, including a 21-yard reception.Brown has returned to the starting lineup for the No. 22 Ducks this season for the first time since his horrific leg injury during a game at Utah in November 2014. He stepped on the foot of a teammate in a goal-line play. Propelled forward, he came down awkwardly and his knee gave way.Television wouldnt replay the injury, a sign that it was bad. But even when Brown awoke in severe pain as the ambulance rushed to the hospital, he had no idea.Later he learned he faced amputation because the blood flow to his lower leg had been cut off. In all, he faced three surgeries and there were concerns hed have trouble walking again -- forget about football.Browns injury came just as he was emerging. He had 25 catches for 420 yards and six touchdowns in 2014, including a TD catch in the game against the Utes before the fourth-quarter injury. It was the most receiving yards at the position in three seasons. The Ducks would go on that year to play in the first College Football Playoff, losing in the title game to Ohio State. Quarterback Marcus Mariota won the Heisman Trophy that season. Brown himself was named to the Pac-12 first team. Now hes part of a Ducks offense that looks to have adjusted well to Prukop so far this season. The graduate transfer quarterback threw for 331 yards and three touchdowns against the Cavaliers. Royce Freeman rushed for 207 yards and three touchdowns, including an 85-yard scoring run, and Olympian Devon Allen caught four passes for 141 yards and a TD.I think were getting better each week. We made strides from where we were last weekend. Thats what its all about, he said. I think if we can just keep getting the ball to playmakers like that, the skys the limit.Next up for the Ducks (2-0) is Nebraska on Saturday at Memorial Stadium, Oregons biggest challenge in the non-conference season.Browns contribution is -- and will be -- key for the Ducks, who have already been hit by injuries at tight end.Johnny Mundt, who had a touchdown in the opener, missed the Virginia game and was seen wearing a knee brace. Fellow tight end Evan Baylis has not played this season.Oregon does not comment on injuries, so theres no way of knowing when Mundt might return, but there were indications that Baylis could be ready for the Huskers, and he was listed behind Brown on the depth chart released Tuesday.Coach Mark Helfrich is aware of tasking Brown too much, too early.Well see how that turns out in the future. Thats one of those things you have to spell a guy like that because he did a lot in the run game, did a lot in the pass game and he needs to stay fresh for the long haul, Helfrich said. For his part, Brown doesnt want to field questions about the injury anymore. Hes put it firmly in the past as he looks to the future. This aint no feel good story, he proclaimed in an all-caps post on Instagram after his touchdown. Time away only made me better. This is a takeover. NFL Jerseys China . MLS Commissioner Don Garber and Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez also will attend the session, which was announced Monday. Three years ago, Karen Khachanov made a terrific first impression in Moscow, beating No. 27-ranked Janko Tipsarevic to advance to his first ATP World Tour quarterfinal. The 17-year-old lost there to Ivo Karlovic and, soon thereafter, began to lose himself. In 2014, I had to start again from the beginning, Khachanov told ESPN.com this week from Chengdu, China. After that result, I had so much noise around me -- friends, players, journalists. I thought it was going to be easy, but the next year showed me it was not.How times have changed. Last week, Khachanov (pronounced Hach-a-nov) played his third career quarterfinal match. This time, the promising Russian, now 20, advanced from that stage for the first time.He took down the still-formidable No. 4 seed, Feliciano Lopez, then No. 6 Viktor Troicki in the semifinals and No. 5 Albert Ramos-Vinolas in a dramatic, come-from-behind final. In the breathtaking span of a week, he beat five players ranked among the top 62.Khachanov, the unlikely Chengdu Open champion, moved 46 spots in the ATP rankings, to No. 55 from 101. He readily conceded he wasnt ready for success at 17.After three years I am now more mature and have improved a lot, Khachanov said. I am a completely different player at this level.Hes the ninth first-time winner on tour this year, the biggest pool of victorious neophytes in five years. Moreover, Khachanov is the third member of the ATPs #NextGen to enter the winners circle, joining Nick Kyrgios and Alexander Zverev. There are only two younger players ranked ahead of Khachanov, No. 24 Zverev and No. 42 Borna Coric, who are both 19.Khachanov showed remarkable resilience in his 6-7 (4), 7-6 (3), 6-3 win against Ramos-Vinolas. The match ran 2 hours, 39 minutes, and the Russian finished with a narrow point margin of 111-109 and 14 aces.According to Ramos-Vinolas, the difference was Khachanovs serving. He was serving so well and so fast, Ramos-Vinolas told the press afterward. Thats why I didnt return so well.At 6-foot-6, 194 pounds, the aggressive Khachanov has a thumping serve and a forehand to match -- like his idol, two-time Grand Slam champion Marat Safin. He said both weapons have to get bigger and more consistent, although his favorite shot is the down-the-line backhand.Afterward, Khachanov said he couldnt believe he had won his first title.I have been working hard, he said, and I am happy to achieve my first goal. This was the kind of performance Khachanov and his coaches have envisioned for several years. At the age of 15, he left Russia to train with Vedran Martic, Goran Ivanisevics former coach, in Croatia. Since then, Khachanov has been based in Barcelona for the past three years, learning the nuances of the game under Galo Blanco, who was Milos Raonics early tutor.Khachanov is a lithe, natural athlete who first picked up a racket at the age of 3. He played basketball in Russia at the national level as a high-schooler. His hobbies include reading and chess, and hes working toward an online degree in physical education from the University of Moscow. He had planned to travel to Tokyo this week to try to qualify, but the run at Chengdu changed those plans and sent him a few days early to Shanghai (which starts next week), where hell try to qualify his way into the main draw of the seasons final Masters 1000 event. It will be his 27th tournament of the season.Mastering the many components of professional tennis takes time. Novak Djokovic won the 2008 Australian Open at the age of 20, but waited three years for his second major title. Kei Nishikori broke through with his first title, at Delray Beach, at the age of 18. It was more than four years before he won again. In becoming the first Russian man to win a title since Mikhail Youzhny three years ago, Khachanov will face some of the same raised expectations experienced by Zverev, Coric and Kyrgios. Now, Khachanov said, hes ready.Ive been working hard, and Ive improved a lot, for sure, the mental and psychological aspect. He declined to reveal any personal goals.I will continue to practice, listen to coach and play the tournaments, Khachanov said. The main thing is to focus on the game and see how it goes.If he does that, in time he could blossom into the top-10 player that some tennis observers are predicting. Day 1 at the Evolution Championship Series featured plenty of upsets and twists at the top, with Tekken 7 reaching its final eight players and a thrilling build-up in the Guilty Gear pool. With three countries represented in Tekken 7: Fated Retribution, the difference in skill was unnoticeable; it was parity at its finest. There will be three Korean players represented in the winners side of the tournament: Jae knee min Bae, Choi SAINT Jinwoo and the always-entertaining Lee Poongko Chunggon of Team Secret. The U.S.s Anthony Geesemaster Jaimes will round out the winners side of the top eight. On the losers side, Japan will be represented by two of its absolute finest: Aoki TAKE Takehiko and early tournament favorite Nakayama Yamasa|Nobi Daichi. And joining them will the last Korean player, Jung narakhof Joong Joo and the last U.S. representative, ?Stephen Speedkicks Stafford of?Circa eSports. There were plenty of upsets that led to this diverse top eight. Circa eSports crowd favorite Hoa Anakin Luu was eliminated well short of the estimated goal to be among the finalists. And the last big shocker was the elimination of Tekken staple, Hyunjin JDCR Kim in ninth place. When the top eight begins, look for fireworks from dark horses Poongko and Geesemaster --- this will be a Tekken finals for the ages.ddddddddddddGuilty Gear Xrd: Revelator was as topsy-turvy as could be. In what could only be summed up as an intense and unexpected top eight for the tournament, these finals may very well steal the entire Evo show. Japan is well represented with six players, followed by Korea and the U.S. with one representative apiece. The favorite, Masahiro Machabo- Tominaga, is still in a great position to claim his throne and assert himself as the force of nature that many thought he could be. He came in with the muted hope but provided plenty of proof that he belonged as the day unfolded. If there could be a contender to crush Machabo-, it might be Kenichi Ogawa Ogawa or the dark horse Omito Omito Hashimoto. Of course, Ryota Kazunoko Inoue should never be ignored, but its difficult to pen him as the favorite to take the tournament. As for the long shots, Kyohei MarlinPie Lehr and Yu TopGaren Gyungwoo, theyre both in the losers bracket and face a country that came in large numbers to dominate Guilty Gear. It would take a minor miracle, but crazier things have happened; this is Evo, after all. ' ' '

WASHINGTON -- The NBA regular season is early but getting late quick for the Washington Wizards, who are struggling defensively and set to face the top two contenders in the Eastern Conference. That stretch starts with Wednesdays home matchup with the Boston Celtics (3-3) before the reigning champion Cleveland Cavaliers visit two days later. Thats a tough task for Washington (1-5), which that has lost two straight after dropping a 114-106 setback against Houston on Monday.Of course, the Celtics havent quite clicked yet this season. Boston enters having lost two straight by allowing an average of 125.5 points in that span. The Rockets sank 17 3-pointers and pulled away from the Wizards with a 12-0 run midway through the fourth quarter fueled by James Harden. Washington ranks 27th in 3-point defense and has lost its way late in each of its setback.I thought we came out with good defensive intensity that gave us that early lead, Wizards coach Scott Brooks said. Then in order to win an NBA basketball game, you have to do it for 48 minutes, and we have not been able to put it together in its entirety. Defensive disposition is the No. 1 thing that you have to continue to focus on. We have talked about it enough and now we have to do it.The Celtics fell 123-107 to the Denver Nuggets Sunday night in their third straight game without center Al Horford, who remains in the NBAs concussion program. He has not advanced in the protocol from what Ive been told, Celtics coach Bradd Stevens told reporters on Monday.dddddddddddd. He has not gotten any deeper than that. The addition of Horford, a multi-time All-Star, to a team that won 48 games last season had many projecting Boston as the primary threat to Cleveland. Perhaps those high expectations have led to the sideways start. The Celtics are fourth with 110.2 points per game, but rank 28th in scoring defense (111.8).The Nuggets led 42-23 after the first quarter and shot 52.4 percent from the field. Were not as good as we thought we were, Celtics point guard Isaiah Thomas told reporters Sunday. When we dont come out with a sense of urgency, were not a good team, and thats what happened tonight. The Wizards started strong against the Rockets, but as was the case in previous losses, faded down the stretch.Nobody is happy. Everyones emotions are a little high, guard Bradley Beal said. Everybody is mad. We are 1-5. We did not expect it to be like this. We just have to figure it out. That wont be easy in this matchup. The Celtics won the series 4-0 last season with three victories by at least 20 points.Beal, Otto Porter and John Wall, who was ejected with 33 seconds left for picking up his second technical foul, each scored at least 20 points in Mondays loss. Washington retooled its bench this past offseason, but have yet to find consistency beyond its starting five. ' ' '
Shivani Kataria was hopeful of being named in the Indian swimming squad for her maiden Olympics, but while waiting for her flight back home to India after competing in the final Asian qualification event in Hong Kong in the first week of July, she could have been forgiven for not having been in the best of moods. The 18-year-old had boldly made a bid for the 50m, 100m and 200m freestyle. Though she was competitive in each category, she missed the Olympic qualifying time by significant margins; her timing of 2:10.42 to complete the 200m freestyle was almost 12 seconds off the qualification mark.Yet, the fact that she was the only Indian woman who competed at the 2015 World Championship in Kazan, Russia eventually made it a formality for her name to be approved under the Universality rule alongside Sajan Prakash in the mens division. The call was made to Prakash, who relayed the information to Shivani.I just couldnt believe it, remembers Shivani. I couldnt sleep on the flight back home. I just kept thinking about it.Shivani, who is looking forward to meeting one of her idols Michael Phelps in Rio, would do well to heed the advice of Nisha Millet, the last Indian woman to have competed in the 200m freestyle at the Olympics 16 years ago.The Olympics can be quite overwhelming, especially when you are a teenager, says Millet, who like Shivani, was just 18 when she headed to Sydney for her maiden Olympics, little knowing that a persistent back problem would make it her last. Guys like Abhinav (Bindra) and Leander (Paes) are used to it in their fifth and seventh outing, but the media attention can be quite a lot to deal with. I won my heat with ease, but couldnt make the semi-finals. I attended the opening ceremony, but I skipped the marchpast since the swimming event was one of the first to be held. Yet, I think I allowed the pressure to get to me.Haryana-born Shivani, who, at the age of six, began swimming at the Baba Gang Nath swimming centre in Delhi during a summer camp, is quite self-assured and driven about her immediate goals.I have to record my best time there, says Shivani of Rio. No Indian has ever made the semis. I want to try and be the first.National coach Pradeep Kumar is a bit more cautiously optimistic, while giving a positive appraisal of Shivanis abilities. Shes got a good technique, and her physical fitness levels are good. She gets her body into a good position and shes blessed with a good kick. She can go faster because she can get stronger still, says Kumar, who has been working with Shivani over the past year, which has included her stint in Phuket along with Prakash. Our swimmers naturally have a slightly inferior technique, compared with the rest of the globe. Secondly, our swimmers and coaches need to have greater scientific assessment of the support that they need.Millet jokes that shes always been a bit scared of Shivani, as she is the first woman swimmer who has challenged and overtaken her 14-year-old national record, but adds a valuable advice that she has passed on to someone she says is carrying the torch forward for womens swimming alongside Damini Gowda of Karnataka.Indian swimmers are habituated to training in the evenings, because thats when finals normally take place, says Millet. But in reality, you cannot afford to let your timings drop even by a second, because that can make the difference between qualifying for a semis and not making it. I have advised her to train at half-past four or five in the mornings as well.On her part, Shivani is aware of the?importance of serving as a role model for younger swimmers, especially following an unpleasant personal experience. My state of Haryana hasnt been very supportive of girls in sport, especially swimming. Once somebody important came up to me and said that swimming costumes dont look good on girls. She further said that I shouldnt be swimming for too many years. I didnt like the fact that their thinking is like that, says Shivani. After me, now theyll tell their children to take up the sport. Our state doesnt have a 50m swimming pool, which I want to help build.Rio should be just the beginning, as Kumar and Millet both agree, for someone who will have at least six or eight years ahead of herself at the highest level. Kumar wants university sport in India to emulate the American model, and thinks that India must try and get both Prakash and Shivani to enroll in universities abroad on swimming scholarships.Shivani, who has been working with a psychologist over the past few months, echoes her coachs thoughts about the importance of mental toughness. I think mental fitness is even more important than physical fitness, says Shivani. For most people, it might be a 50-50 ratio, but for me it is more 60-40. If you win the mental battle, then physically you will do what your brain says.It is this mental strength that Shivani Kataria will bank upon to realise not just her goals, but those for a very exclusive club of Indians to have made it to the Olympics, beginning with Arati Saha and Dolly Nazar in 1952, through to Sangeeta Puri, Nisha Millet and Shikha Tandon in the last twenty years. As coach Pradeep Kumar says, If the mind works, everything just falls in place. Self was acquired from the Buffalo Bandits in a trade for Alex Hill midway through last season, and made his debut in Rochester on March 16, 2013.DENVER -- Ross Ohlendorf returned to the big leagues with a new windup and delivered quite a performance. Displaying a throwback motion with an exaggerated rock step and lifting both arms over his head, Ohlendorf pitched six strong innings in his Washington debut as the Nationals beat the Colorado Rockies 5-1 Wednesday night. Ian Desmond backed him with two hits and three RBIs for the Nationals third win in their last 12 road games. "My windup, I started doing this year," Ohlendorf said. "It gives me rhythm and helps me stay loose, and the ball has been coming out well pitching that way." Well enough to keep the Rockies hitters guessing. "Sometimes you get ready too early," Nolan Arenado said. "Then you get ready too late. You couldnt find that balance. He kept the ball down. He mixed in both sides of the plate. Youve got to give him credit. He did a good job." Recalled earlier in the day from Triple-A Syracuse, Ohlendorf (1-0) allowed one run and two hits in his first start since last Aug. 17 with San Diego against San Francisco. "It couldnt have been easy," said Desmond, who matched a season high with his three RBIs. "I know hes got to be hungry to get back to the big leagues. To come up and deliver like that, thats an outing weve been needing all year. To hold the Rockies at home, all their guys are hot, he did an unbelievable job." Signed by Washington last winter as a minor league free agent, Ohlendorf became the eighth starting pitcher used by the Nationals this year, matching last seasons total. Stephen Strasburg and Ross Detwiler remain on the disabled list but are due to return soon. However, Nationals manager Davey Johnson said he was impressed by Ohlendorf and hopes to find a way to keep the Princeton product around for a while. And he kind of likes his windup. "Its old-fashioned," Johnson said. Desmond extended his hitting streak to a career-high 14 games with an RBI single in the fourth to give the Nationals a 1-0 lead. Washington struck for three more in the sixth and chased starter Jorge De La Rosa (7-4), beating him for the first time in the past five tries. De La Rosa, who has been dealing with a nagging cut on the middle finger of his pitching hand, went 5 1-3 innings and allowed three runs on four hits.ddddddddddddHe struck out five and walked three. De La Rosa had gone 3-0 with a 4.44 ERA in his previous four starts against the Nationals. "He struggled through some of his outing and again in the end," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. "He kept us close enough to win a game. He had to work pretty hard, threw a lot of pitches." Jeff Kobernus began Washingtons burst with a one-out walk in the sixth and Ryan Zimmerman doubled to the wall in deep left-centre, scoring Kobernus. Left fielder Carlos Gonzalez and centre fielder Dexter Fowler both converged on Zimmermans drive, banging into each other as Fowler jumped at the wall. The ball dribbled to the ground and Fowler threw it back in. Both players, though shaken up, remained in the game. Adam Ottavino relieved De La Rosa and Wilin Rosario replaced catcher Yorvit Torrealba in a double switch. One out later, Adam LaRoche was walked intentionally and went to second on a wild pitch before Desmond singled up the middle, scoring Zimmerman and LaRoche. Gonzalez tripled in a run for Colorado in the sixth but Washington got it back in the eighth on an RBI double by Anthony Rendon, who has a hit in seven straight games. NOTES: Nationals C Wilson Ramos re-injured his left hamstring running first-to-third drills two days ago at the clubs facility in Viera, Fla. Johnson termed it a slight setback but said it would be "a long shot" for Ramos to return before the All-Star break. ... The Nationals made room for Ohlendorf by optioning RHP Nathan Karns to Double-A Harrisburg. ... The Rockies announced before the game that they had signed their top draft pick, Oklahoma pitcher Jonathan Gray. The third overall selection in last weeks draft, Gray is the highest pick to sign so far. ... OF Eric Young Jr. was designated for assignment by the Rockies, and RHP Chris Volstad was recalled from Triple-A Colorado Springs. ... OF Michael Cuddyer missed a fifth straight game for the Rockies because of a right ribcage strain but is expected to return for Thursdays series finale. ' ' '

NEW YORK -- American swimmer Ryan Lochte said he over-exaggerated what happened at a Rio de Janeiro gas station and acknowledged it was his immature behavior that got him and three teammates into a mess that consumed the final days of the Olympics.Lochte, in a portion of an interview with NBCs Matt Lauer that aired Saturday , continued backtracking from a story that he initially described as an armed robbery. Police have said the swimmers vandalized a bathroom after a night of partying and armed guards confronted them and asked them to pay for the damage. Its how you want to make it look like, Lochte said. Whether you call it a robbery or whether you call it extortion or us just paying for the damages, we dont know. All we know is that there was a gun pointed in our direction and we were demanded to give money. But he admitted that he understood that he was being told that the Americans had to pay for the damages or the police would be called. At that point, Lauer said, Youre striking a deal. Is that fair?We just wanted to get out of there, Lochte said, adding the swimmers were frightened.Lauer told Lochte that his story had morphed from one about the mean streets or Rio to a negotiated settlement to cover up dumb behavior.Thats why Im taking full responsibility for it, because I over-exaggerated the story, Lochte said. If I had never done that, we wouldnt be in this mess.Lochte also said that he had lieed in telling NBC interviewer Billy Bush the next day that a gun had been cocked and pointed at his forehead.dddddddddddd He said that he was still under the influence of alcohol when he talked to Bush.I definitely had too much to drink that night and I was very intoxicated, he said.Lochte, who dyed his hair white for the Games and had it turn a light shade of green from the pool, had changed his hair back to its regular shade of brown for the interview, which was conducted in New York. As Brazilian police investigated his robbery claim, and eventually held his teammates for questioning while they sorted out his story, he had tweeted he intended to dye it back.He said he hoped to continue competitive swimming but acknowledged that it wont be his decision about whether hed be able to be part of the American team again. USA Swimming and the International Olympic Committee could issue sanctions.Lochte said he regretted how the incident had tarnished Rio and the last week of the Olympics. He also gave an interview to Brazils main broadcaster Globo on Saturday to apologize for his actions.Brazil doesnt deserve that, he said to Globo. I am sorry that my immaturity caused all this ruckus.---Associated Press Writer Adriana Gomez Licon contributed to this report from Rio de Janeiro. ' ' '

They defeated the Chicago Blackhawks 3-1 on Saturday. The Predators (11-9-4) lost in regulation for only the second time in 12 home games this season.Weve got everything clicking. At the start of the year, wed have one good game and kind of get complacent. Now were just keeping our foot on the gas. If theres a better guy in the league net-front, whether its on power play or 5-on-5, I dont know who that is.What I really like about Simmer is that hes at net-front, hes scoring goals, hes on the power play. But hes a hard-nosed, 200-foot player.Michael Raffl gave Philadelphia its third one-goal lead with 3:23 left in the second period. TORONTO -- The Detroit Tigers had a bad start to their four-game series against the Toronto Blue Jays as a depleted bullpen turned a 4-2 lead into a 5-4 loss on Thursday.Meanwhile, the Toronto Blue Jays can chirp happily about a six-game winning streak as they strive to go into the All-Star break on a high note. The Tigers bullpen was without right-hander Bruce Rondon, who was sent back to the hotel during batting practice Thursday with the flu.The Tigers can only hope for a quick recovery as they send out right-hander Mike Pelfrey (2-7, 4.78 ERA) against Blue Jays left-hander J.A. Happ (11-3, 3.54 ERA) on Friday in the second game of the series.Rondons absence meant that left-hander Justin Wilson stayed in for some of the tough Toronto right-handed bats in the eighth and he wound up with the loss after giving up three hits, one walk and two runs in 1 1/3 innings.Right-hander Alex Wilson came in and gave up the two-run single to Troy Tulowitzki that provided the winning margin.Hes been sick for a couple of days, Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said. He was sick on the plane last night, too....We were short. Thats why we were kind of stretching (Shane Greene) and Justin (Wilson) both, trying to get through. I think at the end, really, Justin was kind of out of gas, so we went to Alex (Wilson). He said he did not want to use closer Francisco Rodriguez for four outs. The Tigers also have problems with their rotation going into the break. Ausmus still would not say who would start the games Saturday and Sunday. Daniel Norris and Jordan Zimmermann are on the disabled list. The Blue Jays meanwhile have their rotation set going into the break even though all-star Marco Estrada was put on the disabled list Wednesday and missed his start Thursday, which they overcame with a decent spot start by Drew Hutchison. The Blue Jays have been winning games in a variety of ways. Thats how winning streaks start, thats how they continue, is its a different guy every night Tulowitzki said. Get good pitching, play good defense, mixed in with some timely hitting. I think its the recipe youll hear teams talk about when theyre on a winning streak. The Tigers are still 5-3 on the road trip that takes them into the break. The swept four games from the Rays at Tampa Bay and lost two of three to the Indians in Cleveland before coming to Toronto. The Blue Jays would seem to have the advantage in the starting rotation for the final three games.Happ is having an excellent season. In his past five starts, he is 5-0 with a 3.48 ERA. In six career games, including five starts, against the Detroit Tigers, he is 1-1 with a 4.83 ERA. He will be followed in the rotation by Aaron Sanchez and R.A. Dickey.Pelfrey is a ground-ball pitcher and has induced 18 double-play grounders, second in the American League. He tied for the major league lead in 2015 with 29 double-play grounders. The Blue Jays entered Thursday having grounded into 80 double plays, tied for the most in the AL. They did not hit into any on Thursday.Pelfrey is 1-1 with a 4.96 ERA in three career starts against the Blue Jays. PHILADELPHIA -- All aboard the Wentz Wagon.Carson Wentz aced his first tough test, and the Philadelphia Eagles dominated the Pittsburgh Steelers 34-3 on Sunday to remain unbeaten.Wins over the Browns and Bears were no fluke. The Eagles (3-0) proved they can compete with -- and whip -- the top teams. Now they head into a bye atop the NFC East and suddenly looking like legitimate contenders in the conference. We view every week as a measuring stick, Wentz said. Everyone believes in each other. The rookie No. 2 overall pick threw for 301 yards and two touchdowns, outplaying Ben Roethlisberger. He has zero turnovers in three games.Wentz connected with Darren Sproles on a 73-yard, catch-and-run TD and tossed a 12-yard TD pass to Jordan Matthews.Roethlisberger had 257 yards passing, one interception and no TDs after tossing six in the first two games. The Steelers (2-1) averaged 31 points in the first two games before running into Philadelphias ferocious defense. Some takeaways from the Battle of Pennsylvania:BACKFIELD DEPTH: The 33-year-old Sproles still has plenty left. He caught six passes for 128 yards. Rookie Wendell Smallwood ran for 79 yards and his first career TD. Kenjon Barner had 42 yards rushing and his first score. Meanwhile, Ryan Mathews only carried twice for minus-5 yards.REAL DEAL D: Defensive coordinator Jim Schwartzs defense has been downright stingy. After shutting down Big Ben and the high-powered Steelers, the Eagles have allowed just two defensive TDs in three games. Players say theres room for improvement. Its still early, DE Brandon Graham said. Everybody is still getting acclimated with the system.FIRST GAME JITTERS? Steelers WR Markus Wheaton had a forgettable return to the lineup after missing tthe first two games with a shoulder injury.dddddddddddd He dropped a TD pass on the opening drive that was followed by a blocked field goal . Later, he dropped a catch that stalled a drive in the second quarter. Wheaton seemed dejected afterward, but Roethlisberger encouraged him. Were not going to get down on him, Roethlisberger said. Hes going to get down on himself more than he needs to, though. He knows he should and can make that play, but theres a lot of thumb-pointing going on for us and it starts with me. We win as a team and we lose as a team and that was an offensive, defensive and special teams loss. I challenge all the players and even the coaches to look in the mirror and point the thumb.DRESS REHEARSAL? The Steelers will have one week to figure out what went wrong against the Eagles because theyre going to see a mirror image of this offense next week when they play Kansas City. Eagles coach Doug Pederson played for and coached under Chiefs coach Andy Reid. We fully expect it to be similar next week, DL Cameron Heyward said. We have another test next week to prove we can beat it. We need to look at this film, address our concerns and be ready for Kansas City.CARSONS STATS: Wentz joins Mark Sanchez (2009 with Jets) as the only rookie QBs to start and win their teams first three games of the season since 1970. ...
