The defense was much better in 2013 and 14 than a year ago, but there is plenty of talent in the secondary with Bethany and shutdown corner Langley. As usual, he went big on the transfers, with RB Durall and DBs Ellison and Mosley among those expected to contribute heavily. A quick impact is needed because the Lions have the fewest returning starters (seven) in the conference. LB Bennett, who ranked fifth on the team with 45 tackles, CB Hines and S Sigers are the veterans of a basically new defense. The offense may just need better health after RB Harrell and FB Rogers were often sidelined last season. It allowed Maracalin to come on strong and lead the team in rushing as a freshman. Landor and Isom shared QB duties, but combined to complete only 51.6 percent of their passes. The defensive end had 14 1/2 tackles for loss in 2014. Zellars has been starting since his freshman year and expects to have a banner senior season. They are set at safety with Jones and Poullard, and some midyear transfers will help out the defense. Quarterback was unsettled a year ago, and even though Almond and Blumenthal return to the fold, the starting job might go to transfer Haack, who was the primary starter at UL Lafayette last year in another up-and-down situation. The offense is replacing its most dynamic player, Eagan, but RBs Llorens and Jones will form a productive pair. The defense, which struggled to stop the run, will get contributions from transfers and freshmen. It has dominating players in Denmark, who led the FCS with 88 solo tackles, and Butler, who picked off six passes and broke up another nine as a freshman. On offense, Brown has had two solid seasons at running back. QB McKenzie (161-for-247, 1,855 yards, 14 TDs, 9 INTs) was better in 2014 than a year ago and has battled Sealey for the starting job. Rebowe is hoping some of the young talent continues to fill the two-deep, but the Colonels still need senior leadership. Figaro, an option-style quarterback, has been injury-plagued during his career (last seasons injury was a broken collarbone in November), yet he can be electric when healthy. He set the program record with 1,103 rushing yards in 2013. Leading receiver Bates also hopes to finish his career with a flourish. Their 19 returning starters are the most in the conference. Shealy is looking for his team to handle adversity better and start to win more games. Growing size and depth on the offensive and defensive lines are a plus, but there must be improvement at quarterback, where Staver and Dawson combined to throw 16 interceptions and only six touchdowns. That contributed to the Huskies averaging a conference-low 258.7 yards and 14.3 points per game. RB Peters picked up the slack when Kelly had a sophomore slump last season, and both need to be productive this season. Defensive leader Dolan and punter Guzman (43.6-yard average) are among the best in the conference.
